Kristin Shingler, PhD, assumed the role of Assistant Dean for Curricular Assessment and Integration, effective July 7, 2025.

A teaching associate professor in the department of Diagnostic and Biological Sciences, Shingler previously held the title of Director of Assessment and Curricular Integration from 2020. The elevation of this role from director to Assistant Dean demonstrates the significance of curricular assessment and integration to the School of Dentistry’s long-term educational effectiveness.

Shingler received her PhD in Microbiology and Immunology from Penn State College of Medicine. She joined the School of Dentistry as a postdoctoral fellow in 2016, studying under Paul Jardine, BSc, DUT, PhD, professor of basic sciences, and Shelley Grimes, PhD, late associate professor of basic sciences, later becoming a teaching specialist and a teaching assistant professor. Shingler has completed the AHC Teaching in Active Learning Classrooms Fellowship and the Emerging Technologies Faculty Fellowship Program on GenAI, and has been named Faculty of the Year twice.

“Dr. Shingler’s contributions to our curricular assessment and integration have been many, including incorporating emerging technologies in the classroom, cross-curricular assessment, active learning techniques, alternative grading and best practices in teaching, in addition to her research and teaching responsibilities,” reflected Karl Self, DDS, MBA, Interim Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, in an email to faculty, staff and students about the appointment. “I look forward to Dr. Shingler’s leadership in this area and am appreciative of the value she has brought, and will continue to bring, to the School of Dentistry.”

In her role as Assistant Dean, Shingler will help to prepare for the School of Dentistry’s next CODA accreditation, with a site visit planned for 2028. She’ll continue to teach courses for the DDS, DH, DT, and residency programs in biochemistry, microbiology and immunology, and best practices in teaching, as well as being an active member of the track-lead team for the Academic Dentistry Track. Shingler will also remain focused on her research interest areas that include curricular integration using emerging technologies and application of generative artificial intelligence in dental school curricula.
